High definition televisions brought roughly four times the resolution of television sets that came before them. The TV industry is all set to do that all over again with 4K television sets. Keeping in mind the upcoming festive season, Sony recently launched an 84-inch 4K TV set in India. The Sony Bravia KD-84X9000 will be available for pre-booking from October 20, and will hit select Sony outlets by late November this year for a price of Rs 16,99,990.
4K TVs have approximately four times the resolution of that of HD televisions, and enable you to watch videos at resolutions of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels. The KD-84X900 boasts of a huge 84-inch 4K LED panel, making for a screen area that is four times as large as a 42-inch TV set. It also incorporates Sony’s “4KX-Reality PRO” engine.
The 4K LED panel contains no less than 8 million individual pixels, which is four times the resolution of Full HD TV sets. Sony’s proprietary picture engine upscales a variety of content with different resolutions into high quality output so they look good on the huge screen. The TV features a viewing angle of 60 degrees, so the images reproduced on screen should look pretty good when watching from an acute angle. The TV also supports 3D content.
The TV has two speakers that can be mounted on its sides. Each speaker has 10 drivers in it along with soft dome tweeters for the highs, mid-range units and sub-woofers for the lows. The two-way, 10-unit speaker system is front-facing and has a total power output of 50W.
Sony has also included a user interface system that lets you control the television with all sorts of mobile devices. You also get a load of different apps along with a customised launcher.
There is, for now, very little video content available that can take advantage of the higher resolutions available on 4K TVs. With some work and know-how, a computer connected to the set can display video in the ultra-HD "4K" resolution. The set will also do its best to "upscale" TV, DVD and Blu-ray movies so they look better, but don't expect drastic improvements in quality.
The company appears to be taking all its products to this new resolution. It has already raised the curtain on a 4K home theatre projector, VPL-VW1000ES, priced at Rs. 13.99 lakhs. Sony claims that this 3D-capable digital projector can display 4K images that provide home entertainment enthusiasts with a more immersive, engaging visual experience with over four times the resolution of Full HD.
In addition to supporting 4K native resolution, the VPL-VW1000ES projector also features Sony’s exclusive Super Resolution 4K upscaler called ‘Reality Creation’ that aims to enhance content such as SD or HD, 2D or 3D – to higher definition true 4K (DCI Format: 4096 x 2160p) picture signals.
The VPL-VW1000ES also features a built-in IR transmitter for Full 4K 3D, which drives the projector’s TDG-PJ1 USB-chargeable active shutter 3D glasses and picture position memory which memorises the position of the zoom lens. Apart from the above mentioned features, it also supports 2D and 3D anamorphic films.
