Ranbir Kapoor now a BlackBerry boy

Clearly, by roping in Ranbir Kapoor, RIM is hoping to attract the young generation.

Research In Motion (RIM) has roped in Bollywood superstar Ranbir Kapoor as its brand ambassador in India. As part of this engagement, Ranbir Kapoor will endorse BlackBerry products across various platforms and will also feature in upcoming multimedia ad campaigns in India.

Speaking on his latest stint, Ranbir Kapoor said, "I am ecstatic to be part of the BlackBerry boys' family. As an actor I recognise the power of communication so naturally, and the need to stay connected with friends within and outside of our industry and loved ones. BlackBerry is known for its unique and powerful communication experience; an experience that I have relied on over years to stay informed and connected to things that matter so closely to me while on the move."

RIM has been struggling to attack more users and in fact, in its most recent quarter result, the Canadian company admitted to have lost subscribers, the first such decline in the device's history. Next Apple iPhone to have double resolution

New IGZO panels not only have the best resolution amongh displays but also they consume less power and are thinner too.

Apple is planning to employ a new display panel in its future devices. Known as the IGZO panel, it has not only the best resolution but also it puts less pressure on the battery and is quite thinner too.

If included, the new iPhone's screen will have double the pixel count than iPhone 4S's display and will also have two times more battery life, if everything else like screen and battery size remains the same. Since, the thinner panel would also make the new iPhone slimmer by at least 1-2 mm.

The phone will also come with narrower bezel (the space along the screen) which could mean the phone will be narrower too, or can sport a bigger screen without change in overall size.

The best part is that the cost of these panels will be only marginally higher than normal LCD screens meaning that this change will not affect upcoming iPad, iPhone models' pricing.

The biggest constraint however is that the production of the panels have just been started and might not be able to meet the demands of Apple.

A good new is that Sharp, which owns the patent for this technology has licensed the technology to Innolux Corporation, which will increase the production capacity. Other panel makers in Korea and Japan too have got the license for the panels through licenses that may pave the way for mass production and hence Apple is in all likelihood will include this panel in its 2013 line-up.

Positioned as micro social networking, it allows users to post and comment on photos and videos. Samsung has announced a new version of its Chat On cross platform messaging application that comes embedded with a micro-social networking service called Trunk. So with the new Chat On 2.0 version, which has its inherent messaging capability, users can post on other users' profile. The posts can be texts, images and videos which then can be shared among friends and family. Along with that users will also have the option to comment on the photos and videos uploaded by users. The Trunk service is however not an alternative to the popular social networking Facebook but at least is a step towards the direction in creating something bigger out of Chat On rather than just positioning it as a chat client. Sometime back there was news that Samsung might also add video calling facility to Chat On messenger but as it seems the plans are on hold for some more time or maybe Samsung will reveal it during the Consumer Electronics Show happening next year. The new Chat On application also now allows users to chat with five others through multi-screen feature, which by far is only allowed by Google Talk. The service will also enable users to share content posted on the micro social networking and share it on popular social media websites such as Facebook and would also allow users to come and comment on posts right form Facebook for better social media integration. The service will be rolled out to devices in the days to come and we certainly hope it to add some new life to the Samsung Chat On platform.

So even after having penta-band LTE support, the Nokia Lumia 920 would not be able to utilise the present LTE network which is available in Pune, Kolkata and Bengaluru.

Indian LTE Network works on TDD (Time Division Duplex) network which presently is being utilised by China and India. Since the network format is not widely used, most device manufacturers do not have support for this technology and same goes for Nokia Lumia 920 too.

Nokia Lumia is meant to support FD (Frequency Division) LTE networks which are supported by most countries other than India and China. Till now, Huawei's Ascend P1 is the only smartphone, which has been announced for India, comes with support for TDD-LTE technology.

The ChatON app is one of the players in the rather crowded instant messaging apps market. Samsung ChatON is one of the new comers and it’s not only limited to Samsung devices. It’s been available to Android and iOS over the past year and recently, the app was also introduced to BlackBerry phones. The app is totally free and the service is cross-platform, which means users across different platforms can send messages to other devices, and for free. There’re also developments on the Android tablets front – Samsung has released an optimised version of the app for Android tablets now. The iOS version of the app was launched earlier this year while the Android app came out in October last year along with the Bada version. The ChatOn for iPhone is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, with iOS 4.2 or later.

Currently, ChatON supports Android, Bada, Samsung feature phones, iOS, Blackberry and Web.

The highlighted features of this app for Windows Phone include a profile page, animated messages (via drawing), location info, calendar, multimedia sharing (and storage), group chat and interaction Rank.

ChatON faces stiff competition from apps such as WhatsApp, which offer a BBM-like service for free across platforms. Samsung hopes to bridge the gap in popularity by adding more support to the app and also adding lots of unique features to the app. ChatON has features such as Buddy Interactions, which gives you an idea of the most interacted with friends in your contact list. The app is somewhat like social networking as it allows contacts to leave messages on your profile. There’s also support for watching media mentioned in chatrooms. Of course, there are the standard animated and customisable messages that you can send to your friends.

To download the app,  head over to the Google Play store.

BBM 7 with BBM Voice should be available in India soon

While BBM 7.0 with BBM Voice is not available in India currently, some indicators show it should be available in India very soon—within the next few weeks, what with the impending launch of BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion's (RIM) do-or-die OS BlackBerry 10 on January 30 and the expected operationalisation of the New Telecom Policy 2012 that liberalises India's telecom policy regime.

RIM’s latest goof-up in India had been BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) 7.0 with Voice. In mid-November, Indian news media carried global releases giving news about the beta release of BBM 7 that featured BBM Voice, which allowed free calling over Wi-Fi to other BBM users who also have BBM 7 installed and are connected to Wi-Fi. RIM goofed up by not clarifying that the Beta wasn't available in India, thanks to regulatory concerns, and made things worse by inviting Indian BlackBerry users over e-mail to try BBM 7.0 Beta when it wasn't even available here.

While BBM 7 has gone from Beta to final release in a period of less than a month, with the final version released in early December, RIM has refused to comment on when BBM 7.0 with voice would be released in India. All a RIM spokesperson would say was, "We are currently understanding the policy framework and guidelines applicable in India regarding Voice Communications through Instant Messaging Solutions. Since BBM Voice uses BBM as an IM tool, we will launch the same in India, as soon as we have gained clarity on the policy guidelines applicable in India for such IM Voice services."

The issue clearly seems to be that of Voice-over-IP and whether Indian norms allow such communication. While there are other apps such as Viber and Skype that allow similar voice features over IM, RIM is understandably wary because the Indian government has a history of waking up well after a service is established and deciding it is illegal. Remember Push to Talk that some mobile operators offered? Or the current 3G imbroglio where it has been decreed that operators cannot allow 3G roaming, and which will have to be decided by the courts?

RIM also has more reason to worry considering it has been in the Indian government's crosshairs over the past few years with the Indian government insisting that BES mail encryption keys should be made available to Indian security agencies, despite RIM protesting that even they did not have access to this and only enterprise customers had the keys.

According to one expert, while PC-to-PC VoIP (voice calls originating and terminating at IP end points) is legal in India, calls originating from an IP phone and terminating on a foreign phone is legal only when done via licensed operator and calls originating from an IP phone in India and terminating on an Indian telephone is currently illegal, but should be allowed by the New Telecom Policy 2012, which was approved recently.

While RIM seems to be awaiting clarity and may be speaking to the government and legal experts, it should be possible for RIM to launch BBM 7.0 in India soon with the New Telecom Policy 2012 liberalising the Indian telecom policy regime. Besides, there's another big reason why it has to be done soon. BlackBerry's all-new, do-or-die OS BB10 is scheduled for a global launch on January 30. While there are no indicators if India will be among the launch markets, RIM executives have said that even if India were not a global launch market, BB10 should be in India within a few weeks of global launch.

BBM 7.0 will be baked into BB10 and unlike the current scenario, where the company is not making BBM 7.0 available with OS 7.1 and below devices in India, it won't be able to do so with BB10, considering earlier versions of BBM may not work with BB10. Also, BBM Voice is a key highlight of BB10 and it's pretty much an open secret that free video calling over Wi-Fi will come with BBM at launch with BB10, though no RIM executive is willing to go on record on the matter.

If the Indian voice over IM scenario is not clarified by them, RIM's BB10 launch in India will be headed for disaster—with a key capability missing. Hence, it's clear that RIM will take a decision on BBM 7.0 with Voice soon and should be making it available at the earliest.

Airtel has asked for permission from govt to test technology which will allow voice calls over LTE network. Airtel, which is the largest mobile operator in India and also has 4G spectrum in 8 circles (including Qualcomm's 4 circles) has sought permission from government to test technology that will allow it to offer voice call service over LTE (4G) network. This move comes soon after news of RIL(Reliance Industries), which is the only player with PAN Indian 4G spectrum, seeking similar permission. According to reports Department of Telecom is likely to give the permission to Reliance Industries. airtel-4g Voice calls are currently not allowed to be offered on 4G networks, however new telecom policy which will come into effect sometime in 2014 has provisions that is supposed to change this. But even with that being in place, currently even technology is not ready for voice call offerings on 2.3MHz spectrum band in which Indian operators have for 4G (while 700MHz band on which 4G is offered in USA does allow voice calls). Therefore it is important that these operators test the technology that will allow them to offer such services. Airtel earlier this year bought 49 per cent stake in Qualcomm's 4G venture which has spectrum in Delhi, Mumbai, Haryana and Kerala taking its total tally to eight circles. It is already offering services in Kolkata, Bangalore and Pune and is likely to launch service in Chandigarh soon. Airtel is likley to use a circuit switching technology that will automatically put its LTE subscribers on its 2G and 3G network when making a voice call and in this way they will be able to enjoy voice call feature across the country and not just in circles where Airtel has 4G network. RIL (Infotel) too had recently informed the government that it had ingeniously developed a technology to test the same - VoLTE - voice over LTE,and said a trial would be helpful in maturing this technology platform.

BlackBerry Z10 coming with 4.2 inch touchscreen

Meanwhile, images of BlackBerry X10 has also been leaked which shows it with a Qwerty keypad.

Details of RIM's (Research In Motion) upcoming BlackBerry Z10 smartphone has been leaked along with images of the BlackBerry X10 - both are based on soon-to-be-introduced BlackBerry 10 operating system.

We carried the images of the BlackBerry Z10 last week and now Phone Arena has revealed its specification. According to the report, the phone will feature a dual core 1.5 GHz TI OMAP 4470 processor.

According to the website, the 3G, LTE phone will come with a 4.2-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels, giving it a pixel density of 356 ppi. It will come with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB of internal storage with a hot swappable micro SD card slot, which means that you can take out the SD card without the need to switch off the smartphone.

The smartphone reportedly will also support all the standard WiFi networks and GPS along with A-GPS. An 8 megapixel camera with autofocus and a 2 megapixel front facing camera is also there on the smartphone. The cameras will have 1080p video recording ability. All of this will be powered by an 1800 mAh removable battery.

Meanwhile, images of BlackBerry's N Series phone, which is expected to called the X10, has been leaked online by a Chinese tech site, showing it with a physical Qwerty keypad. The phone will get a touch plus Qwerty design and will not have any navigation keys.

The keys are lined up in straight rows other than that the phone looks similar to the current Bold series smartphones of RIM.

We expect to have features like the BlackBerry Z10, except its smaller screen. However, we will have to wait a bit longer to get the exact details of the phone.

RIM, which is facing dwindling sales and subscriber base, is likely to launch both the handsets on January 30 next year along with the launch of Blackberry 10 operating system which will be a completely new operating system and might not even be backwards compatible with what RIM already offers in terms of enterprise security or user application. However it is known that the new operating system will come with more than 70,000 applications in its app store at the time of launch.

RIM is also expected to announce reduction in subscription charges making certain categories free.

CodecInstaller: Find & Install Missing Codecs

Codecs are a problem that every average PC user has faced on the computer. When you play a video, or music, you may, may not hear the sound, or may not get the video. If so is the case, then almost certainly a codec is missing.

It would be a hassle for users to go online and try to find the missing codecs themselves, if the computer has not already told them which codec is missing. This is exactly where CodecInstaller comes in handy.

CodecInstaller is a Windows program that detects the audio and video codecs already installed on your system, analyzes the file that is not working and determines the missing codec.

Currently, the CodecInstaller program supports the following file formats: avi, mpeg, wmv, wma, ogg, flac, mpc, mp3, mp4, wav, and more.
Just install the program onto your Windows hard-drive. Run the software. You can then select from either “Installed Codecs” to see the pre-installed codecs on your computer or “Analyze File” to find the missing codecs that you need to play the file properly.

  • Find missing codecs quickly and automatically.
  • Never install the same codec again – know which codecs you already have.
  • Supports many languages other then English.

Freegate: Access Blocked Overseas Websites As Quickly As Local Ones

Do you live in a country that is heavy on censoring websites? It sucks when you are trying to make use of the Internet, and a really awesome website is not available simply because your government will not allow it. Thankfully, there are ways to work around this, you just have to get a little creative. This software is used primarily in China, so if you test it outside of China, it is unlikely that it will work.

Freegate is a great option for getting around blocked websites for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that it’s free, and there certainly no price better than free. The second is because it promises to download international pages just as quickly as if they were local.

If you are traveling to China, you will want to download this to your computer before you go or else you might find that your Internet does not access many of the websites you are accustomed to visiting. It is a tiny program and it will not suck down many system resources to have it.

Features:

  • View international websites that are blocked.
  • Built to work in China, may not work elsewhere.
  • Ultra small program won’t use many resources.
  • Uses DynaWeb to bypass blocks.

Change Hidden iTunes Preferences 3.0: Tweak iTunes Settings You Weren’t Meant To See [Mac]

Have you ever wanted to take more control over iTunes? Do you wish there were more options and settings that would let you set everything more to your personal preferences? Well if so, you need to take a look at Change Hidden iTunes Preferences 3.0. As the name implies, it allows you take all those hidden settings and make them your own.

The list of options that can be tweaked is quite extensive. Some of the more popular ones involve taking features from a previous version of iTunes and bringing them back. For example, you can view your entire library as a single playlist, an option that was removed a few versions back.

One of my personal favorites is the option to remove Ping. I don’t know if anyone uses Ping, but I certainly never found it useful.

Some other highlights include: allowing half-star ratings, creating playlists for purchased song collections, playing songs while importing, and disabling “elastic” scrolling behavior. Best off all, you can download Doug’s Change Hidden iTunes Preferences 3.0 for free.

Features:

  • Change all kinds of hidden iTunes settings.
  • No need to use terminal or any advance methods.
  • Just run the app and select your options.
  • Free to use.

LG set to showcase two Google TV models at CES 2013

LG Electronics (LG) has announced that it will introduce an extended Google TV line-up at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. LG claims that its new models, the GA7900 and the GA6400, will deliver an intuitive user experience at various sizes and new designs.

Google’s latest platform and LG’s redesigned Magic Remote Qwerty work together to improve the effectiveness of Voice Search and the PrimeTime quick guide. LG states that the updated Smart Home also adds to the user experience by offering access to VoD, YouTube and more apps. The premium model will incorporate LG’s advanced Cinema Screen design for a sleek and modern finish.

“LG is committed to providing diverse home entertainment options that offer the most satisfying user experience and the latest LG Smart TVs with Google TV do just that,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO, LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. “They deliver a stellar user experience by merging the latest Google TV platform with LG’s proven Smart TV technology. The result is a comprehensive system that is groundbreaking in its simplicity.”

The brand claims that the LG Google TV aims to redefine the user experience. The new Smart Home offers different types of “cards” that act as folders for apps and other content. The new My Interest Card can display useful information including real-time weather and customisable news.

The user interface can be navigated using the redesigned Magic Remote Qwerty, which combines a complete keyboard with the features of the Magic Remote’s point-and-click control. The enhanced natural language recognition featured in the remote is a match with Google’s search functionality. LG claims that the overall voice-based capabilities multiply the effectiveness of the PrimeTime quick guide to provide a good user experience and make browsing through the more than 100,000 available movies and TV episodes on LG Google TV easy.

LG Smart TV’s dual core CPU enables easy menu navigation, fast Internet browsing and video streaming. LG claims that the additional processor power allows the TruPicture XD Engine to process images quickly, which results in richer colours, deeper contrast and greater overall picture clarity.

LG has also applied its advanced Cinema Screen design to the premium model to offer a sleek, modern look. Reliance introduces Facebook Messenger Plan at Rs 16 per month

Reliance Communications today launched its first of its kind prepaid plan ‘Facebook Messenger Plan’ for all Reliance GSM subscribers across the country. Reliance GSM customers can now make unlimited usage of Facebook Messenger across the country at a nominal fee of Rs 16 per month without paying any extra data consumption charges. The “Facebook Messenger Plan” is available with a validity period of 30 days from the date of recharge and the plan is auto-renewed every 30 days unless unsubscribed.

The Facebook Messenger feature app works on a cross platform of smart and feature phones, and allows users to be able to reach anyone regardless of what device they are using. It also recently launched a new version of an instant messenger service where users need only their name and phone number to sign up for a new account, so they can send messages to their phone contacts instantly. Users can download the app at fb.me/msgr. The plans with Reliance will allow its GSM customers to use this new app at no extra cost.

Commenting on the launch of ‘Facebook Messenger Plan,’ Nilanjan Mukherjee, Wireless Chief Revenue Officer at Reliance Communications Limited, said, “We have always been at the forefront of offering innovative products with incredible affordability for our customers and the launch of Facebook Messenger Plan is yet another step in that direction. We are confident that ‘Facebook Messenger Plan’ with unlimited usage of Facebook without any extra data charges is set to provide a compelling new experience with incredible affordability to Smartphone users across the country on our superior network. We are hoping this offer to trigger a significant shift of youth customers using Smartphones to our superior network.”

Commenting on this association with Reliance Communications in India, Kevin D’Souza, Country Growth Manager at Facebook, said, “Facebook’s mission is to make the world more open and connected. And mobile is a big part of that. Reliance users are now able to take the opportunity with the free data access plan to Facebook services like our new free messaging app to connect with their friends and families.”

Reliance GSM subscribers can now subscribe to the ‘Facebook messenger Plan’ by sending a SMS “FB” to 53739 from their mobile phones.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Facebook has updated its Android app to embrace a wider audience base by removing the necessity to be a Facebook member to use the messenger service. It could help in enticing more non-members to use Facebook services while giving existing users a bonus by letting them chat with friends who are not on the social networking website.

At the Le Web Conference in Paris, Peter Deng, Director of Product at Facebook, said, “The SMS protocol has been around for 20 years. It’s designed for these old phones, and they don’t take advantage of the location features, the touch screen, the picture taking that today’s phones have and that’s why we invested in it.” He added that a lot of people have had to open email accounts just so that they could access Facebook, and the newer version of Messenger will allow more people to benefit from Facebook services without the hassles of signing up.

“As a result of focusing on mobile, for the past year and a half, we've been investing a lot in mobile messaging. We've noticed that people have wanted more than SMS can provide. We want to let people connect with each other and feel like they're in constant communication,” said Deng.
