Idea hikes local and STD tariff in one circle

In Tamil Nadu the new tariffs are as high as 2 paise per second. In most other circles the hikes are up to 1.5 paise/second or Re 1 per minute.

Idea Cellular has started the process of increasing tariff in the country, and the first circle to face this hike is Tamil Nadu, where the base tariff has been increased to 2 paise per second for local and 2.5 paise per second for STD calls.

While neither confirming nor denying the development the spokesperson of Idea Cellular said to The Mobile Indian, "At circle level changes in tariff do take place and that has nothing to do with pan India tariff." Incidentally, new price is listed on the Idea Cellular website.

The tariff hike seems to be going on for some time now and in most circles Idea is charging 1.5 paise per second for local calls; the normal tariff prevalent across operators is 1.2 paise per second.

In some circles like Kerala, Himachal, Orissa and Punjab Idea Cellular is charging Re 1 per minute for local calls. Circles like Delhi, Haryana, UP West and Kolkata have not seen as tariff hike yet.

It has been seen earlier that Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular quickly hike their price or reduce them one after one another and that leads us to believe that similar hikes will be coming from Airtel and Vodafone too.

Most operators are in deep financial trouble and are in fact bracing themselves for further charges levied by the government on the spectrum that they already have. We did a story earlier in September where we analysed the reasons why operators will hike tariff and it seems that operators are indeed looking at tariff hikes with Idea Cellular now taking a lead.
