To bring joy to its millions of users in India, Google has started a new consumer connect initiative under which the search giant has started a service that will allow Gmail users to send 'free SMS' across the country.
To avail this service Gmail users have to add mobile numbers of their contacts in the email address book and after doing that they can send SMSes to mobile phones from chat windows.
Google initially provides a user with a free SMS credit of 50 messages. This credit is increased by five every time someone responds to the text message by sending a return message.
In India, this feature is available with around eight service providers including Vodafone, Reliance, MTS, Tata, Idea and Aircel.
The SMSes sent from Gmail chat are delivered to mobile phones while replies from the mobile phone come into the chat window. For the mobile phone user, the reply is charged at local SMS rate as per their normal billing plan.
