Facebook Messenger for iOS v2.0 released

Facebook recently updated its Messenger service to version 2.0 for its iOS users. The new version of Facebook Messenger supports iOS 6, the latest version of Apple's OS, and can be used on the iPhone 5. As per the description of the update on the iTunes Preview page, the list of additions include the ability to swipe left anywhere on the app to quickly see who is available and send a message. iOS users can now add the friends they chat with the most, at the top of their Favourites list. The conversations section has a new look. Further, the app claims to offer improved speed and reliability, as also a host of bug fixes.

In May this year, there were reports of Facebook Messenger for iOS as well as for Android being integrated with new features to display whether a message has been read, when a contact is typing, and where they might be typing from. The read receipts that the Messenger app provided also specified names of the contacts who have read a group message. The idea behind this addition was that when you talk to someone offline, they are able to give you visual clues that they have received your message and are in the process of responding. The read receipts let you know if the recipient actually got your message, whether they missed them or whether they have just chosen not to respond.

Users can also see the name of the town or city that a sender has sent the message from, if he or she has turned on location services. Of course, the problem with message receipt services is when you want to ignore someone or don't want to respond. "I didn't get your message" has been an easy way to get out of awkward conversations, but even Apple's iMessage and BlackBerry's BBM don't allow you to use that line anymore. Sending a message and hoping for a response gets doubly disappointing when the message shows as delivered and read, but you haven't received a response yet.

Facebook launched the Facebook Messenger application for older versions of Windows recently. The social networking service had officially unveiled the Facebook Messenger app for Windows early in March this year, but in a stinker to older Windows users, the messenger application was launched only for Windows 7. While Microsoft said that a version of the app for Windows Vista was in the works, there was absolutely no support for Windows XP users.

This means avid Facebook users still using the popular Windows XP and the not-so-popular Windows Vista can now begin using the Facebook Messenger app on the desktop. The Facebook Messenger app allows Facebook users to chat with each other without signing in to the Facebook website. The app allows you to accept new friend requests, and you can view it when they are tagged in photos.
