Official VLC Player app coming to Android soon

The developers with VideoLAN hint to work on the official VLC Player app for Android platform.

Playback of several multimedia files is still an issue with the Google Android platform. Hence not all smartphones support playback of popular video formats. However, this may change soon as the popular VLC Player app would soon be released for the Android platform, its developers have hinted.

Currently, the Google Play Store offers several video playback apps that are stand alone or dependent on certain codec packages to be downloaded.

Till now, enthusiast developers have tried to bring the popular VLC media player for the Android player through their independent efforts. The Mobile Indian reported about such instance back in March.

Now the official VLC player developers have hinted that work on the official app for the Android platform is underway. However, at this moment, no estimated dates have been shared by the developers. Thankfully the Android 4.0 ICS brings support for variety of new video formats and containers so we hope that the VLC app will arrive in the coming months.

Android would be the first mobile platform to get the VLC media player officially. In past, Apple iOS got the VLC Player but by a third party developer and later the app was pulled down from the app store for several reasons.

As of now, there are several video players available offering different features and support for variety of video formats.
