Chromecast update breaks local-media streaming apps

But functionality might return in future

A recent update to Chromecast streaming device has removed the support for streaming via external sources, reports The Verge. According to the site, third-party applications like Koushik Dutta’s Allcast are no longer working after the update. Chromecast users are thus left with streaming content only from select supported sources like Netflix, YouTube or via Chrome Tab mirroring, which isn’t really that smooth.

When contacted by The Verge, Google indicated that the local media streaming support might return in the future.

“We’re excited to bring more content to Chromecast and would like to support all types of apps, including those for local content. It’s still early days for the Google Cast SDK, which we just released in developer preview for early development and testing only,” the company said in a statement.

“We expect that the SDK will continue to change before we launch out of developer preview, and want to provide a great experience for users and developers before making the SDK and additional apps more broadly available,” Google added.
