Late last year, Samsung showed off a concept video of what their future mobile devices would look like. The video gave us a glimpse into the future and we were left with the impression that these mobile devices were quite a long way off. While this may be true to an extent, it appears Samsung may use some of this technology on the next iteration of the Galaxy Note smartphone. A report by Mashable claims that the handset will feature a flexible screen.
In the concept video that surfaced last year, we saw that the device had a transparent display and could easily be folded. The report claims that the next version of the Samsung Galaxy Note will not have this incredible feature, but will be flexible to a point where it can withstand bumps to an extremely large degree.
The website notes, “Not designed for bending your phone in half, the flexible screen would instead be a material that makes the screen more resilient when it comes to bumps and falls. With a flexible display, if you drop your phone on a rock it has a chance of bouncing back. Do the same thing with glass, and you’re probably in for trouble.”
The ability to be resilient to bumps is not the only advantage the flexible display may possess, as the report also goes on to state that the semi-flexible screen used on the Galaxy Note 2 will allow the handset to be thinner and this will also help the manufacturer to add a larger battery to the device.
A related report by Korea IT Times states, “AMOLED is the future of the display industry highlighting its flexibility and transparency. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2, expected to be released next month, uses a 5.5 inch flexible display, a step forward to extending Samsung’s lead over its rivals. The product utilizes Unbreakable Plane (UBP) and plastic substrate that reduces thickness by 0.4T (0.4mm), consequently increasing battery capacity.”
Here’s what we expect the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 to feature:
A 5.5-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen with a 1680 × 1050
4G LTE, EDGE, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, NFC
GPS possibly with GLONASS and A-GPS support
Bluetooth possible v4.0 with USB and hopefully USB-on-the-go
12/13 megapixel AF/Touchfocus camera with full HD video recording and playback
A front facing camera for video calls and chats
Possibly a 64 GB edition, along with 16 GB and 32 GB versions all with expandable support
MHL for AV out
Earlier reports have also indicated that the next generation Galaxy Note is expected to feature the Pen-tile matrix display instead of the RGB variant used in the S II. Apart from the screen size, the design is said to be heavily inspired from the Galaxy S III, so we can expect a similar form factor with heavily rounded edges and a pebble-like design. If the Note II is indeed modeled around the S III, there is a good chance that the phone will get some or all of the ‘S’ features like S Beam, Smart Stay eye tracking, Smart Voice, etc.
