Samsung announces Galaxy Player 5.8

Samsung is scheduled to show off its wares at the IFA 2012 event in the near future, but it looks like the brand cannot wait to show off its upcoming hardware. The brand has recently announced the expansion to its Galaxy Player line up by unveiling the Galaxy Player 5.8, a post by Samsung Tomorrow reads.

As the name of the device suggests, the Galaxy Player 5.8 features a 5.8-inch display, a screen which is much larger than that found on the Samsung’s Galaxy Note smartphones. There is practically little known about this media player, but the specifications that are available indicate that the display features a resolution of a mere 960 x 540. However, this feature is compensated by the fact that it packs a 2500mAh battery that should be more than sufficient for watching a range of video clips. As far as the other known specifications go, the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.8 reportedly comes equipped with either 16 or 32GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot for storage expansion and a VGA camera.

The media player runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface on top. There is no word yet on the processor used on the Galaxy Player 5.8, but we will surely know more when the IFA 2012 event takes place. At the event, date of availability as well as pricing of the device should be known.

Samsung is scheduled to host an event prior to IFA 2012 called the Mobile Unpacked 2012. The major announcement at the event will be the unveiling of its much talked about Galaxy Note 2 smartphone.

Here is a quick glance of what is expected to be found on the Note 2:
5.5-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen with a 1680 × 1050 resolution
4G LTE, EDGE, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, NFC
GPS possibly with GLONASS and A-GPS support
Bluetooth possible v4.0 with USB and hopefully USB-on-the-go
12/ 13 megapixel AF/ Touchfocus camera with full HD video recording and playback
A front-facing camera for video calls and chats
Possibly a 64GB edition, along with 16GB and 32GB versions, all with expandable memory support
MHL for AV out

Earlier reports have indicated that the next generation Galaxy Note is expected to feature the Pen-tile matrix display instead of the RGB variant used in the S II. Apart from the screen size, the design is said to be heavily inspired by the Galaxy S III, so we can expect a similar form factor with heavily rounded edges and a pebble-like design. If the Note II is indeed modelled around the S III, there is a good chance that the phone will get some or all of the ‘S’ features such as S Beam, Smart Stay eye tracking and Smart Voice.

This handset is also believed to be equipped with a flexible screen, owing to which it can withstand bumps to an extremely large degree. The report also says that the semi-flexible screen used on the Galaxy Note 2 will allow the handset to be thinner, and will also help the manufacturer to add a larger battery to the device.
