Google has revealed that it will begin shipping the Explorer Edition of Google Glass to the developers next month. The public debut of this AR device still remains a mystery.
Google confirmed to TechCrunch that it is now very close to shipping the $1,500 devices to developers. The booking for the Explorer Edition was originally started at last year’s Google I/O event, but the developers, who booked it, have been waiting since. The wait is finally going to be over for them.
In addition, Google recently allowed others to be a part of Google Glass testing, by being the first ones (sort of) to buy this device. Company selected 8,000 people in the US, but there is still no word on when they will be able to get the device.
It was being reported earlier that Google had partnered with Hon Hai, the company behind iPad/iPhone assembler Foxconn, to manufacturer the Google Glass in California, United States. May be the units being built at this facility will be given to the lucky 8,000.
Google introduces Glass Collective
In related news, Google has also announced something called Glass Collective – it is actually an investment syndicate between three firms to help the entrepreneurs build new apps and other stuff surrounding Google Glass.
“We’ve formed the Glass Collective, an investment syndicate between our three firms (read Andreessen Horowitz, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Google Ventures) to provide seed funding to entrepreneurs in the Glass ecosystem to help jumpstart their ideas,” Bill Maris, VP, Google Ventures noted in a blog post.
To work with the Glass Collective, contact investors at Google Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, or KPCB. Investing partners from each fund will jointly review startup pitches related to Glass.
