Qualcomm Zola smartwatch coming in September: Report

Looks like chip maker Qualcomm is planning to jump in the smartwatch market with its own offering. According to reliable leaker evleaks, the company will release a smartwatch called Zola in September this year.

There are no other details available right now but Qualcomm could use one of its entry-level chips and Mirasol display in this device.  Technically known as Interferometric modulator display, Mirasol offers paper-like readability in almost any ambient condition, while consuming significantly less power than any other display available today.

Qualcomm even showcased a mock-up of Mirasol display based smartwatch (images above & below) at SID display week earlier this year. Could we see a variant of this smartwatch as Zola later this year? May be or maybe not.

Thanks to Mirasol, Qualcomm makes almost every major component needed in a smartwatch, so this shouldn’t be a huge jump for the company.

The report of Qualcomm Zola smartwatch comes just days after Sony unveiled its third-generation smartwatch at Mobile Asia Expo. Dubbed as SmartWatch 2, this Sony wearable acts as a second screen to Android phones apart from working as a normal watch.

Smartwatches are going to be a big thing this year and we have heard that all consumer electronics giants like Samsung, LG, and Apple as well as search giant Google are working on their own smartwatches.
