Idea offers free Facebook Messenger access to prepaid users

Indian telecom operator Idea Cellular has announced that it has partnered with Facebook to offer its prepaid 2G and 3G users free access to Facebook Messenger app on Android (and iOS).

Idea users simply have to download the app from Google Play and activate the free access by dialling *800*88#. The free access will be valid for three months and Idea users can active it anytime by July 31, 2013.

“With the increasing mobile broadband penetration in India, the mobile phone is becoming the most important device for accessing Internet and social networking platforms. Nearly 50% of data users on the Idea network access Facebook on their mobile phones. The free Facebook Messenger service will enhance their social networking experience and enable Facebook users to chat with their contacts while on the move,” said Sashi Shankar, Chief Marketing Officer – Idea Cellular.

“Messaging is a fun and useful way to share privately and connect with friends in smaller personal groups. We are happy that Idea subscribers can now enjoy free access to Facebook Messenger and experience new features such as Chat Heads and Stickers. This partnership allows us to connect people in new areas and offer them the Facebook experience on the Idea network,” said Kevin D’souza, Country Growth Manager, Facebook.

Like every other free scheme, free FB Messenger access also comes with one condition – you can only use 200MB data per month as a part of Facebook Messenger free access, if you cross the limit, you are likely to be charged as per the data rates of your existing 2G/ 3G plan.
