MediaTek announces MT8125 quad-core chipsets for tablets

With more and more manufacturers are releasing phones with quad-core CPUs to attract eyeballs and also give the extra kick in the performance.

One of the most seen quad-core chipsets these days in India is MediaTek’s MT6589 processor, which debuted on the Micromax Canvas HD in India and has gone on to power quite a few low-cost smartphones. The company has now announced a new quad-core application processor MT8125, but this one is targeted at mid-range and high-end tablets. The SoC has a Cortex-A7 CPU with clock speed up to 1.5GHz and a PowerVR Series5XT Graphics. The company also revealed that this chipset will be seen in tablets soon, including Lenovo’s IdeaTab S6000 series.

The MT8125 chipset should bring some much-needed improvements in the tablets market, which has in a way stagnated thanks to the barrage of 7-inch slates with similar specifications. The MT8125 chipset is said to support cameras with up to 13 megapixel sensors. It has integrated ISP (image stabilisation) and will support video recording and playback up to full HD 1080p. In addition, it brings support for full HD (1920 x 1200) displays and comes with a proprietary MiraVision technology, which is known to offer better visual quality.

In terms of connectivity, it will support 3G HSPA+, 2G EDGE, Wi-Fi versions, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and FM. So there’s no LTE support yet. MediaTek has used Wi-Fi-certified Miracast technology in this chip, which is said to improve the speed of multimedia content sharing between devices.
