LG has announced today that it will be launching LTE TDD supported 4G smartphones in the Indian market this year. The company also revealed that its LTE TDD devices will also go on sale in Saudi Arabia, China, North America, Japan and Australia in 2013.
“LTE TDD is a superior alternative in some countries due to its flexibility in uploading and downloading content,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “We’re excited to offer consumers LTE TDD capable smartphones based on our unparalleled knowhow in 4G LTE technologies. With the commercial introduction of LTE TDD service, LG will build upon its expertise in 4G LTE by offering future device options utilizing this standard.”
Considering that most of the 4G network providers in India including Airtel are using LTE TDD technology, it makes sense for LG to tap this emerging segment as quickly as possible. However, as 4G is still in a very nascent stage in the country, we don’t expect LG to launch more than one or possibly two devices with LTE TDD support.
LTE TDD is a growing 4G technology and according to Yankee Group, markets including China, India, Europe and the United States will account for more than 134 million registered LTE TDD lines by 2016.
