India Post offers instant money remittance through mobile

India Post has tied up with BSNL to start this service where a message will be sent to the post office where money has to be delivered

Soon people will be able to transfer money within the country in a matter of minutes through India Post. The service will use a mobile to send a message to the post office where money is to be received, which will in turn handover the money to the beneficiary instantly.

The postal department will launch this instant mobile money remittance scheme with the help of BSNL Infrastructure by next month, chief postmaster general of Kerala circle, Sobha Koshy, announced.

In the first phase, the scheme will be implemented in select states like Kerala, Bihar, New Delhi and Punjab, Koshy told reporters after releasing a special postal cover in connection with the ruby jubilee celebrations of Kottayam Press Club.
In Kerala, the scheme will be implemented in 30 post offices in Idukki, Aluva and Pathanamthitta. As per the scheme, a person can send money through a post office which will send a message to the other post office about the amount to be given to the recipient at the other end, she said.

The service, if implemented properly, will not just boost post office revenue, but will also prevent a lot of hardship that migrant labour from these states face while sending money. Currently, most of them rely on people from their locality going back home, or sending money to people who have a bank account in the locality, who then give the money to the concerned person.

India Post currently offers money transfer through a tie up with Western Union, but with this mobile remittance service India Post will keep things in-house and will offer services to a wider audience. This system will also be easier to implement in post offices across the country.

Koshy said the process of computerising the entire postal network in the country, numbering 1,55,000 post offices, was going on.

The department is also planning to implement a range of products including e-post instead of letters, where a print out of an email message can be delivered to a person who doesn't own an internet connected PC or mobile; and electronic money order scheme by which up to Rs 5,000 can be sent with a small message.

While talk of the service has been going on for quite some time now, its effectiveness can only be judged in the coming times. Also interesting to see would be whether the project is implemented properly and if people will start using post offices again in large numbers.

Now start video conferencing from Gmail inbox

You can start video chat with nine friends including those who are on Android and iOS devices from Gmail inbox. Earlier only peer to peer video was allowed.

Google first introduced video chat from Gmail in 2008, and now it has made the feature even better by including Hangout feature of Google+ in the Gmail.

Unlike the earlier process, when video chat was based on peer-to-peer (single person to single person) technology, with this new feature you can reach people on your Google+ list. You can also chat with those who are accessing their Google account through Android or iOS based smartphone or tablet from your Gmail account itself. You can watch the official video of this feature to understand what this really means.

All Gmail users will benefit from this upgrade, but if you and the person you're chatting with also use Google+, you'll get even more from the Hangouts experience. You'll be able to video chat with up to nine people at once, watch YouTube videos together, collaborate on Google documents and share your screen (take screenshot and send).

Plus, Hangouts has a bunch of fun effects that you can try out, like pirate hat or mustache.

This feature is already available in Gtalk Android application, but the recent step brings this functionality to a wider number of devices so that one needs not be bothered about which device his/her friend is on.

OEMs to receive Windows 8 RTM on August 1

Microsoft had earlier announced that the Windows 8 Release to Manufacturers (RTM) will be available in the first week of August. However, news has it that  Mary Jo Foley revealed in a recent Windows Weekly Podcast that as per her sources from MSDN and TechNet services, the Windows 8 RTM will be made available for its OEM partners on August 1. Also, recently Win8China got their hands on leaked screenshots of the Final Build of Windows 8 RTM, which is said to be the build 9200.16384.WIN8_RTM.120725-1247. The site also got a glimpse of the Lock Screen of Windows 8 RTM.

Windows 8’s final public version is scheduled to be released on October 26 along with Windows 8-enabled devices from companies such as HP, Dell, Acer, Asus, and Samsung, and also Microsoft’s first Surface Tablet (WinRT version). The Intel based Surface will be released 90 days after the release of the WinRT version of Surface Tablet. As per a post on The Windows Blog, the author Brandon LeBlanc has stated, “October 26th, 2012! That’s right! Just a few minutes ago, Steven Sinofsky announced at Microsoft’s annual sales meeting that customers will be able to get Windows 8 – whether in upgrade fashion or on a new PC – starting on October 26th. Earlier this month at the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference, Tami Reller told attendees Windows 8 would be available in October. But now everyone has a specific date to mark on their calendars. It’s on mine!”

We had also seen some leaked screenshots of Windows 8 a few days back. The screenshots suggest that the OS promises a host of changes including a boot screen with the new Metro-style logo, Internet Explorer 10 that interacts with the colour of the Windows 8 theme, new colour picker options for the desktop UI, additional Metro inspired wallpapers and backgrounds for lock screen. What makes it even more special is its availability for both desktops and tablets. It will also be made available for ARM devices through an operating system called Windows RT, which includes the all-new Metro user interface. PCs, notebooks and x86 tablets will have access to the standard Windows 8 operating system, which will include both the new Metro user interface as well as the traditional desktop user interface. The Metro user interface is designed specifically for tablets and touchscreens.

With Windows 8, Microsoft has put their best foot forward. It has been focusing on several factors including graphics performance. In a post on the Building Windows 8 blog, Microsoft’s graphics group programme manager Rob Copeland explains,”Graphics performance on Windows depends on both the operating system and the hardware system, comprised of the CPU, the GPU (graphics processing unit), and the associated display driver. To ensure that we could deliver a great experience for new Metro style apps, we needed to make sure that both the software platform and the hardware system would deliver great performance. In the past we’ve used many different benchmarks and apps to measure the performance of DirectX. These have been largely focused on 3D games. While games are still very important, we knew that many of these existing ways to measure graphics performance did not tell us everything we needed to know for graphics-intensive, 2D, mainstream apps. So, we created new scenario-focused tests and metrics to track our progress”.

3 million add-ons downloaded from Mozilla Firefox

Popular browser Firefox has been having a steady increase in add-on downloads since 2007, and has recently finally crossed the 3 billion 'add-ons downloaded' mark, Mozilla announced. According to a post on the Mozilla blog, “That’s almost half of the world’s population and more than the number of people on the Internet today.”

Add-ons were introduced by Mozilla to the web in 2004 with the Firefox Addon-ons Gallery, and to phones in 2009. More than 85 percent of Firefox users have at least one add-on installed, and on average, a user has five add-ons installed.

Some of the most popular add-ons for Firefox include AdBlock Plus, Firebug, NoScript, Personas Plus and Video DownloadHelper, among others. The most popular categories for add-ons include privacy and security, search tools, bookmarks and themes.

According to the blog post, there are more than 150,000 user-created collections of add-ons to choose from, some of which are Family Organizer, Traveler’s Pack, Sports Fanatic, The Paranoid Kit, Web Developer’s Toolbox and Online Shopping.

The blog post goes on to thank users of the browser, “This amazing milestone was made possible by the hundreds of millions of Firefox users and more than 25,000 Firefox Add-ons developers around the globe.” Mozilla has made an infographic about this achievement as a way to thank users.

According to earlier reports, the Firefox blog has recently announced the release of a new version of beta for Firefox 15. One of the main purposes of the new version of the popular web browser is fixing memory leaks, both for the browser and its add-ons. The other big addition to the beta of the new version of Firefox is the addition of support of the Opus audio format. The format can be played directly in Firefox 15 and offers better compression than formats such as MP3, OGG and AAC. It is also supposed to be good for both music and speech, can dynamically adjust bitrate, audio bandwidth and coding delay, and supports both interactive and pre-recorded applications. The beta was released less than a month after the release of Firefox 14.

Mozilla has also recently announced that Firefox 16 will have support for web apps in its versions for Windows, Mac and Linux. This indicates that when the company’s Marketplace is released, which could be Q4 of 2012, users will be able to run web-based applications from any of their devices. It is also interesting to note that Firefox OS is coming next year, and this entire bundle is part of Mozilla’s Kilimanjaro project, with great syncing features at the core.

New Intel tech will bring 3G to low cost phones

Intel's SMARTi UE2p will offer lower footprint and reduce the cost of mobile chip besides offering 3G connectivity.

Intel has announced a new low cost 3G solution for mobile phones, tablets and machine to machine connectivity. Called SMARTi UE2p, it is a radio frequency solution that integrates 3G power amplifiers into radio frequency circuits. The new system-on-chip (SoC) solution enables a smaller footprint and reduces complexity for developers as well as the associated total cost of ownership.

"The SMARTi UE2p will simplify the product development and supply chain logistics with the reduction in component count and system complexity," said Stefan Wolff, vice president of the Intel architecture group and general manager of Multi-Com.

"This will allow our customers to introduce lower-cost 3G handsets and support the transition of the machine-to-machine (example: fridge with connectivity) market segment toward 3G-based connected devices to help enable the 'Internet of things," Stefan added.

The new technology reduces number of components and even allows power management, which is normally done by a separate chip currently.

This solution is targeted at new mass market segments such as sub-Rs 5000 level 3G handsets and machine-to-machine modules that allows connectivity for fridge, washing machine etc to let them directly order supplies when they run out, or to inform you the same.

This will also enable low cost tablets to offer 3G connectivity which are currently only on WiFi.

Samples of the tech will start to reach manufacturers by end of this year and is expected to start shipping to consumers by beginning of 2013.

gText: Free Group Text Messaging

Ever since the mobile phone was invented, text messages have exploded in popularity. The ability to send quick messages using the number keypad has made text messaging (also known as SMS’s) a hot favourite, especially amongst young people and students. Now a service called gText is offering users the ability to send instant free text messaging to groups.

Do you have a group of people you want to keep in touch with on a regular basis?  Maybe it’s a class or perhaps your customers or family?  Well with gText, you can send one text message which is instantly sent out to everyone in your network. The messages can be sent using your phone or your computer (which would make fast typing a lot easier and a lot more accurate).

But what makes this service really great (especially if it is being used to keep in touch with children and young people) is that by default, everyone’s mobile number is kept private from the others in the network (although this can be changed by the owner of the mobile number if they wish it).  So there would be no need to worry about bullying or harassment via text messaging as no-one would have access to any of the other numbers in the group.
gText also claims that you can use the service to send files such as photos and documents.

Features:

  • Send text messages to a group of people
  • Send the messages via a phone or computer
  • Numbers are kept private from the others in the group
  • Send files via text messaging

Snipplist: Share & Save Interesting Information Online As Small Blocks Of Text

At the moment, the trendy thing to do online is snip, collect and curate information, whether it’s showing photos on Pinterest or sharing 140 characters worth of wisdom on Twitter. Now Snipplist wants to go a step further and provide people with the ability to snip small blocks of text and save it online, as well as share that text with other people.

All you need to do is sign up for an account, which at the moment is confined to only a Facebook login, and then drag the Snipplist bookmark to your browser bar.  Then when you see text that you would like to highlight and share, just highlight the text with your mouse and click the Snipplist bookmark.  Snipplist then takes the text, as well as the weblink to the page in question, in case users want to see in what context the text was said (something which can sometimes be a problem on Twitter) and places it on the Snipplist feed.

The service is still quite young but this is one to keep an eye on in the future.

Features:

  • Sign up with a Facebook account login.
  • Snip blocks of text by highlighting with your mouse and clicking the bookmark.
  • Weblink to the page is also captured to provide context to the text.

Lavie Z, world's lightest Ultrabook weighs 875 grams

Ultrabooks are slowly but surely getting into the notebook segment. They are emphasizing more on portability - the key aspect of a laptop, than previous generation notebooks. NEC personal computers have announced a new Ultrabook, the Lavie Z, which according to the company, is the world's lightest Ultrabook.

The Lavie Z notebook weighs just 875 grams, which is incredibly light for a laptop. The other specs of the device include a 13.3-inch display and a battery that can charge upto 80 percent in one hour. The display resolution is a cool 1600 x 900 pixels and the ultrabook comes in two variants: one with a Core i7-3517U processor and 256 GB of SSD storage; the other with a Core i5 - 3317U processor and 128 GB of SSD storage. There is 4 GB of RAM on both variants. Other features of the Lavie Z include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and a 720p webcam. "Quick power on" gives you an on time of about 2 seconds. There's a 'Network Duet' feature that can share data with a second PC as well.

NEC have also underlined the initiatives they took for the weight reduction of this laptop. The company adopted what they claim is the world's first lithium magnesium alloy that makes it lightweight. They have also included a die cast magnesium housing that has given it a further 0.5mm - 0.6mm thinness. The laptop has an integrated display enclosure design and the housing is assembled directly with the components of the display contributing to a narrower frame. Next, to achieve a thinner profile, instead of using a keyboard that has to be attached to a unitized body, NEC introduced an integrated design. This design assembled the keyboard parts to the housing directly. The laptop is incredibly thin as well, with the thickest part measuring 14.9 mm. From the bunch of Ultrabooks that we have reviewed in the recent past, the Toshiba Portege is the only one that comes close to the Lavie Z with a weight of 1.12 kg. The Asus Zenbook UX31 too has an incredibly thin profile, but an extremely high price tag. It'll be interesting to see the retail cost of the Lavie Z.

The launch date of the Lavie Z laptop has been set to August 23, 2012. Its pricing and availability have not been disclosed yet. How much would you be willing to pay for a laptop so thin and light? Let us know in the comments section below.

RIL moves closer to launching 4G services in Mumbai

Reliance Industries has awarded Samsung the deal to roll-out network in Mumbai circle, which means that we are few months away from Mumbai getting its LTE network.

Samsung has procured the much-awaited Long Term Evolution Time Division Duplex (LTE TDD) deal from Reliance Industries (RIL) for the Mumbai circle, Lightreading.com has reported quoting reliable industry sources.

LTE TDD is a fourth generation or 4G telecom technology that is the successors of 3G or third generation services, offering data speeds of upto 100 Mbps.

Given that contract for supplying the back-end equipment for rolling out the network has been awarded, it is expected that Mumbai should get its first LTE network or 4 G services (If Airtel doesn't do it even before them) in a couple of months.

Samsung will supply back end equipment like RAN (Radio Access Network)for accessing radio signals; Core layer or fiber cables that are responsible for fast and reliable transportation of data across a network; and access layer which contains devices that allow workgroups(systems) and users to use the 4 G services in the network, a reliable industry source said on condition of anonymit to light reading.

RIL is the only player with a pan-India Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) spectrum. According to industry sources, RIL plans to launch LTE services in the circles of Mumbai and Delhi initially. As of now, only Bharti Airtel has launched the 4G services in Kolkata and Bangalore earlier this year.

Apart from RIL, Qualcomm and MTNL have 4G spectrum in Mumbai. Qualcomm has already signed a deal with Airtel to roll-out services in all its four circles including Mumbai. MTNL which was contemplating WiMax based services is it to launch it on a commercial scale.

Google Fiber service for Internet and cable TV launched

Google has launched its Google Fiber service in Kansas City today. The highly anticipated service is aimed at consumers only, and offers gigabit-speed Internet connectivity and cable TV. Google has divided the service into three packages. There is a common construction fee of $300 for connecting the home to the fiber infrastructure, irrespective of the package opted for. Internet access alone will cost $70 for Internet. Internet and cable TV service will cost $120 a month.

The reason Kansas was picked as the launch city is explained by, Kevin Lo, General Manager of Google Access, in a blog post on the Google Fiber Blog. Kevin wrote, “When we announced that we wanted to provide a community with Internet access more than 100 times faster than what most Americans enjoy today, we asked who was interested in working with us. More than 1,100 cities raised their hands, and those of you in Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri won us over with your enthusiasm for better, faster web connections.”

The registration process for this service in Kansas has already started will end on September 9, 2012. However, you will need to do something more than just register to avail the services. First, you need to pre-register by visiting the Google Fiber website (http://www.google.com/fiber). Next you have to rally neighbors to register for the services. The neighborhood with the most number of registrations will get the service first.

The different packages are:

Google Fiber + TV: This is the ultimate package which offers symmetrical gigabit-speed connection plus Google TV, which offers local channels, YouTube, Netflix and Google’s “fiber channels.” Consumers opting for this package will also get a brand Nexus 7 tablet, which they can use as a remote control for the TV. There is also a regular Bluetooth remote control in the package, in case you find the tablet a bit too big to pass as a remote control. Plus, Google is also planning to release an iOS app for controlling the Google Fiber TV product with iPhones or iPads. A Wi-Fi router and a 2-terabyte storage box are part of this package. Consumers will also get a free terabyte of storage in Google’s cloud locker, G Drive. The total cost for this package is $120 per month and if customers sign a two-year contract Google will waive the $300 connection fee.

Google Fiber: This package offers the same thing except the TV package. This will suit consumers who just want high-speed Internet connection and are not much interested in the TV service. This package costs $70 a month and for users who sign a 1-year contract Google will waive the $300 connection fee.

Free Internet: This is exactly what it says – free Internet connection with no monthly charge. However, consumers will have to pay the construction fee of $300 either lumpsum or $25 a month if they sign up for one year. This plan covers any household which falls in the fiber footprint.

Facebook working with HTC for Project Buffy smartphone

Facebook has reportedly been working closely with HTC on its upcoming smartphone project.

Facebook has reportedly been working on a smartphone that will have the social network in its core. Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive officer of Facebook, has hired a team of former Apple employees who worked with the first version of the iPhone for the upcoming Facebook smartphone, dubbed Buffy. Bloomberg reported that the popular social network is closely working with HTC for the smartphone.

Even though previous Facebook bearing smartphones did not attract millions, the social network continues the effort to create its own smartphone. Facebook has the former Apple employees who worked on the first iPhone to work on the Buffy smartphone project. One of these employees has worked on the iPad as well. Besides that, Facebook has also acquired a digital publishing software maker that was founded by former Apple employees who had worked on user experience and feel of the software on iPhones and iPads.

Facebook stated in an official statement, "Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social. We're working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world."

Other than an army of former Apple employees, Facebook still needs a handset partner and is hence reportedly working with HTC. As reported previously, Zuckerberg is worried about Facebook's face in the mobile space. He does not want it to remain just an app but be deeply social. As of now, it is difficult to judge whether Facebook is trying to create a new mobile operating system or whether it is working on a stripped down Facebook-integrated OS. Similar to the one Amazon created with Kindle.

Facebook integration in the iOS 6 is what everyone is looking forward to and therefore the company will automatically cover millions of iOS device users.

Low cost Android handsets may come with Swype

Swype is also in talks with operating system developers for integrating Swype keyboards in their OSes.

Swype keyboard, which is known for its innovative text predicting feature, and is quite popular on Android may soon be available on low cost Android smartphones manufactured by Indian players.
Notably, its makers, Nuance Communications, had announced the launch of a newer version of the keyboard, with support for Hinglish language - a mixture of Hindi and English, yesterday.

Zach Hooper, director of product management, Nuance Communications, said to The Mobile Indian, "We are in talks with Indian handset manufactures to make available our Swype keyboard in low cost Android smartphones manufactured by them."

He didn't share the timeline when it will be implemented or the names of Indian handset players with whom Nuance is in talks but said, "by this endeavor we plan to reach the masses and offer an interesting and easy keyboard input interface for entering text in their mobiles."

Interestingly, Micromax's first Android smartphone - A60 had Swype keyboard support and after that the mobile maker has launched a couple more Android smartphones but they don't support Swype.

Apart from handset players Nuance is also in talks with operating system developers for integrating Swype keyboards (via SDK) in their OSes.

Google Search gets 34-button virtual scientific calculator

Google.com has added a new 34-button virtual calculator with scientific functions to its search bar. By adding this scientific calculator, Google further extends the capabilities of its search bar beyond web pages, conversions, and more. This tool simplifies the use of the search engine to be used as a handy calculator. Moreover, this tool can be used across browsers on web and mobile. To access the calculator, one has to simply type ‘calculator’ in the search box and it pops up instantly. It will appear even if you type your mathematical query in the search box. For instance, if you type "3*8-5" in the search box, the answer is displayed directly in the scientific calculator, which appears once you hit on the ‘Enter’ button.

Now, this isn’t the first time that Google has introduced a calculator. Google already has a graphical calculator in tow. The graphical calculator that was launched about more than a year ago is also accessible directly from the Search box. This scientific calculator comes with an array of scientific functions which includes the sin, cos, tan, and log functions, exponential calculation, and square roots.

Google often tweaks its products for the better and sometimes for worse (read, new Gmail look that was forced upon everyone). At the Google I/O event this year, the company said they have redesigned search from the ground up in the Jelly Bean OS, with a new user interface and faster, more natural Voice Search. They also went on to state that one can type their query or simply ask Google a question. Google can speak back, delivering a precise answer, powered by the Knowledge Graph, if it knows one, in addition to a list of search results.

Recently, Google search for Android tablets and the iPad was spruced up with a weather widget, which allows users to take a quick look at the weather before they step out. Users have to just type weather in the Google search on their tablet to view the new weather widget and it shows the weather conditions at their location. The widget also displays information about the weather in any other city in the world. Users have to simply type the name of the city or the ZIP code and 'weather' next to it. Google wrote in a blog post on Google+, "When you type [weather] into Google on your +tablet, you'll see the current weather and you can scroll through the hourly and ten-day forecast. You can also toggle the Precipitation and Wind buttons to check out the percent chance of precipitation and wind direction/ speed, respectively". The Search giant also released the Google Now feature recently that aims to bring users information, as and when they need it, like informing them about the weather.
